Virgil was only senenteen years old-still young but his mother
thought he was old enough, and so she courted a girl for him.
But virgil was in luck. His mother fell in love with a girl who was also
the silent choice of his heart. He made her a month before and she smiled
at him. E had smiled at her too but had lacked the couraged to speak to
her.
His mother took Virgil to the girl’s house one afternoon and
introduce him to the girl. After that she and the girl’s mother left them
together and went off to talk about some business of their own.
The girl did not move and kept on looking at hi. Evidently she
expected something more from him. But he had nothing else to tell her.
And so they sat, hardly moving, their mouth shut. Occasionally their
glances would meet and then both would look away.
176
“Why?”, she asked.
“And yours?”.
The girl laughed and he was surprised. Why did she laughed? Was
there something funny in what he had said? Maybe. He laughed too.
And so for a whole minute they stared at each other smiling ly. The
girl’s shyness was disappearing, but Virgil had not yet conquered his
timidity when the two mothers returned. Virgil looked at his mother and
saw that she was happy about something. And then Virgil and his mother
bade Cely and her mother goodbye, Virgil’s mother stating that they would
call again and Cely’s mother nodding in agreement.
Virgil and his mother visited Cely and her mother on the afternoon
of the next day. And again Virgil and Cely were left alone while the
mothers went into another room. The two young people were now less
restrained. Virgil told Cely about his childhood and Cely told Virgil about
hers and their afternoon together ended with tales about each other’s
childhood days, while in the other room the two women making
agreements looking to the future.
Every afternoon for two weeks Virgil and his mother called at the
girl’s home and beginning the third week, Virgil went alone. At the end of
the month, Virgil learned from his mother that he and Cely would soon bu
married.
177
Cely, too, learned from her mother that she and Virgil would soon
be joined in wedlock.
In the afternoons, Virgil and Cely took long walks in the fields. She
would ask him for flowers and he would pick them for her. They were no
longer sa bashful together and felt as they had know each other for years.
Once Cely asked Virgil jokingly, “If I married somebody else, will
you feel sad?”.
“Virgil’s words made Cely very happy. She too loved him.
The two mothers were also glad their children showed each other
affection. “They would make a good pair”, they said.
But one day, Virgil’s mother came to him, with worried look on her
face.
“No”, said the mother, “But we…”. She did not finish the sentence
but turned away.
178
“But mother”, she cried. “Virgil and I did not quarrel.
Napangiti rin siya kahit hindi naman dapat. Wala naman kasing dahlian
upang siya ay ngumiti. Samantala, hindi pa rin kumikilos ang dalaga. Tinitingnan
lamang nito ang kausap. Halatang may nais itong marinig mula sa binata. Subalit
wala naming masabi si Virgil. Nanantili silang nakaupo at manaka-nakang
nagsusulyapan. Wala kang maririnig na usapan.
179
Siya man
Cely”.
181
“Hindi”, ang sagot ng kanyang ina. “Subalit kami…” ang sabi sabay
talikod.
He was silent again. I could hear the low voices of my Mother and
Sister Aurelia downstairs. There was also the voice of my brother Leon,
and I thought that Father’s voice must have been like it when he was
young. He had laid the roll of tobacco on the window sill once more. I
watched the smoke waver faintly upward from the lighted end and
vanished slowly into the night outside.
The door opened and my brother Leon and Maria came in.
I told him him tha Labang was resting yet under the barn.
I looked at Maria and she was lovely. She was tall. Besides my
brother Leon, she was tall and very still. Then I went out and in the
darkened hall the fragrance of her was like a morning when papayas are
in bloom.

BAHALA NA
183
Our special significance is this realization in the economic life of
our people. The bureaucratic system has impressed upon most of us that
we must observe punctuality or lose out; that out pay envelop comes to
many of us during stated periods of the month and not before or after,
although we may spend its content in advance; and that our efficiency of
times detrmine our income.
Mang Doro goes to the cockpit this morning, caressing his talisain
gamecock, in his pocket several pesos representing his week’s wages
and few additional pesos borrowed from Aling Iska, the salt seller.
Suppose he loses the money as he invariably does and returns home in
the evening with his dead talisain dangling from his hand, where would
the family’s meals came from? And the debts just incurred, how would
they be paid? Bahala na! How would Aling Iska feel about it if she does
not get back the money she earned from selling salt? Bahala na!
Everything is left to bahala na: our inability to plow our fields in time, our
colds and fevers, the leak in our nipa huts, the camotes in the backyard,
our poultry and hogs, the rise and fal of prices, the future of our
children….
