Ang Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) (o San Juan de Letran College (SJLC),
Letran College (LC), o Letran) ay isang mataas at pribadong kolehiyo pang Katoliko na
matatagpuan sa Intramuros, Maynila. Itinatag ito noong taong 1620 ng mga prayleng

The Colegio de Manila, also known as the Colegio Máximo de San Ignacio, was the
first college school for the boys in the Spanish Colonial Period. It was established by the
Jesuits in Intramuros, Manila through Fr. Antonio Sedeño, S.J in 1590. However, it was
only in 1595 when the college formally opened. The school was located on Calle Real de
Palacio (now General Luna Street) and Calle Escuela (now Victoria Street). In 1601, an
extension college called the Colegio de San José was also set up as a residential college
for students studying at the Colegio de Manila. The two institutions were often confused
for one another.
The Colegio de Manila was also regularly referred in history books as Colegio Seminario
de San Ignacio, Colegio Máximo de San Ignacio, or simply Colegio de San Ignacio,
possibly to distinguish it from the Colegeo de San José. Even though the San Ignacio was
not a university in a strict sense, it was still was duly authorized to confer university
degrees in theology and arts. This was by virtue of the privileges that Pope Gregory XV
had conferred upon all Jesuit colleges in 1621 in a papal brief, giving them the "faculty to
confer university degrees". In 1623, the pope's authorization was confirmed by Philip IV
of Spain. The decree arrived in Manila in 1625.
The Jesuits founded USC in August 1, 1595, a time when Cebu and the Philippines were
still under Spanish rule. The school was then known as Colegio de San Ildefonso. When
the Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1769, the school was closed. However,
in 1873, it was reopened under the name Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos. The
Vincentian priests later took over the school in 1867.

The college housed the fifteen Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul who arrived in
the Philippines on July 22, 1682. They were the ones in charged of running the school.
The college was located in Intramuros. In 1866, Colegio de Santa Potenciana was merged
with Santa Isabel. The offices of Monte Piedad opened in 1882. But it was destroyed by
fire during the liberation of Manila. The occupants of Santa Isabel transferred to Sta.
Rita's College. The parish priest of San Miguel, Monsignor Vicente Reyes offered rooms
of the convent to the sisters of Santa Isabel. This enabled them to start anew in their
apostulate of educating the young.
Colegio de Santa Rosa is one of the two remaining original schools (Letran) in
Intramuros, Manila. Among the outstanding alumni of Colegio de Santa Rosa were
Teodora Alonzo, the mother of Dr. Jose Rizal and Carment Planes who is the first
woman councilor of Manila.
Founder
M. Paula de la Santisima Trinidad, a Dominican sister, founded Colegio de Santa Rosa
in 1750 in the name of Beaterio y Casa de Ensenanza, Colegio de Santa Rosa. It was
primarily established for the education of Filipino orphaned girls. The first classes were
opened on the Feast of Saint Rose of Lima on August 30.
In 1965, the Recoletos Church was demolished, and in 1968, the six-storey edifice was
built. In 1980, CSJ-R bought a new site in Basak Pardo, Cebu City, then built the new
building for the grade and high schools, the Recoletos Coliseum, Open Gymnasium and
the Pope Paul II Retreat House. In 1996, the Talavera House of Prayer was built in the
scenic hills of Quiot, Cebu City.
The years that followed gave the school opportunities to expand, all the time developing
Quality Christian Community-Oriented Education. On November 28, 1998, the 52nd
General Chapter held in Granada, Spain, voted for the creation of a new Religious
Province in the Philippines dedicated to St. Ezekiel Moreno, OAR. The Recollect
Philippine Province, where USJ-R belongs, now stands as the eighth regional cluster of
communities of the ORDER of AUGUSTINIAN RECOLLECT worldwide.
